Beautiful post and appropriate song from Peter. You ask what we're doing. I'm actually writing songs along with my journalistic work on the Trump regime. Posted two today on #sustainwhat. Here's one: Save Dreams for Sleeping"
We all hold a dream somewhere deep in our minds,
Where everything’s fair and everyone’s kind.
Flowers all blooming, no smoke in the skies.
No wars in the headlines, no tears in your eyes.
But save dreams for sleeping. It’s time to get real.
Hard workers are suffering while billionaires steal.
Young women in trouble can’t find caring hands.
House builders born elsewhere get bundled in vans.
I’m not saying it’s easy. All good things take time.
Those trying to divide us are good at their crimes.
But if we stop dreaming, dive into the storm.
A more perfect union will start being born.
Our country needs mending, but how to begin?
With problems so tangled, no start and no end?
Reach out to a stranger. Get out of your pack.
Find what you agree on and walk that one track.
The trust that you build - day by day, two by two -
Will carry us further than fighting will do.
I’m not saying it’s easy. All good things take time.
Those trying to divide us are good at their crime.
Freedom can mean so many different things to so many. I never thought I would know what it felts like to have Freedom being taken from us in our country. It has always been in other lands not ours, not here. Thank goodness we have been brought up to make our voices heard and have the 'freedom' to do it now.
I too am utterly appalled by the takeover of the US Government by unelected and conflicted parties who have no concept of what their actions are doing to hardworking people - doing their jobs in and for the US Government, and those who are recipients of much needed aid. I do feel some pity for those who support Trump and his actions - they need help.
Now is when my commissioning pledge as a US Naval Officer - ..." to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, against all enemies foreign and domestic..." becomes so true. Domestic terrorism has a new group in play.
Thank you. I’ve been wondering of late, what would Woody Guthrie or Bob Seeger be singing today? How does one put into lyric the absurdities and meanness of today? In this time of 24/7 news, conjecture, and lies, we need more music for strength and inspiration.
Noel, I’m taking care of myself by joining United Methodist Women of Faith in Texas and Texas Impact to fight MAGA (actually MAWA - Make America White Again) legislators and their Voucher plans to give $1o,ooo parents to take their children to a private school, and the horrible Abortion Ball bill they are implementing. Every voice matters. Calls to legislators matter. We matter. I matter! I encourage everyone I can to use his/her voice - make the calls and face-to-face visits. Our future matters!!! On the more positive side, I live with gratitude. In every situation there is something for which to be grateful. I know that God is in this mess with us and for that I am grateful for sure.
I take care of myself by playing with a five year old, going for walks, and drawing cartoons. My wife and I spend time together just enjoying each others company.
Taking care of myself by going out for live music. Helping the cause of freedom by showing up at the Maine rally at the state house (Feb. 5th) to protest, writing our Maine Congressional reps about my concerns and sharing information on the social media platforms I belong to.
I appreciate the writings you've shared. With the continuing movements the government is undergoing,I find myself utterly at a loss at how to process .It's similar to being in a abusive marriage you feel you can't get out of... and for the cherry on the top amidst it all, he fired all of the heads of The Kennedy Center and made himself the Main Chairman for The Golden Age of Culture - I went to bed
The link to Diana Butler Bass' 10 Ws was very helpful...Wonder is probably my favorite way of coping with difficult times...getting out in nature, walking with my dog, even in foot deep snow, watching chickadees and woodpeckers at the feeder, music, music, music...I also am memorizing Mary's Magnificat...the words give me hope and solid ground during these difficult times
I am learning Spanish at long last; I am playing a little banjo every day when arthritis permits; I write short e-messages to my legislators every weekday; and I carry the middle verse of Light One Candle…(…let anger not tear us apart…with peace as the song in our hearts!) in my inner ear at all times. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful song, which I think could be the anthem of hope for these times.

Sending love to all who feel worried, threatened, unclear about their futures, our futures. Together we are STRONG. We must not forget that.

This song has helped to get me to sleep at night and to calm my anxiety.
Amen to everything you mentioned! Long live Democracy!!

Thank you for asking, Noel. At 73:
